Behind the Number

Writing from inside — daily life, family, food, mental health, and everything in between. Unfiltered, by other humans.

Not just Another Day

Today is Wednesday, August 26th, 2026. Today is one of my guys’ birthday. Jail is a terrible place to spend any day, but birthdays hurt the worst. You spend the day thinking about what you would’ve done if you were free.

Instead of a day filled with love and adventure, your day is filled with people you don’t vibe with, and headcounts. Instead of great food, smoke, and drink, it’s state food, meds, and stink.

Regardless, we make the best of our situation. A couple of the homies are going to cook something and make a cake for him. It’ll be fun. A little something to remind him that he matters. Because behind his federal number is a person, and even we sometimes forget that.

So next time you feel yourself about to lose your temper, remember — you don’t want to be in a place like this for your birthday, drinking toilet wine and shit. Be smart. Stay free!!!
